Using the story

1. Use the text and illustrations from the story to draw a mapping diagram that shows the links between consumption and damage to the environment.

2. Explain any links between the story and the following issues: waste, efficiency, conservation, sustainability, over-consumption, ecological footprints, trade, climate change, wildlife, pollution, money, fairness.

3. Complete the story and show how the Very Hungry School turns into the Very Happy School. Your story should provide answers to the following questions:

  • How is the school persuaded to change its ways?
  • How does it manage to reduce consumption?
  • How do these changes affect the local and global environment?

4. Write a letter to the children, governors or headteacher at the Very Hungry School.

Maths activities

1. What do you notice about the set of numbers used to describe the consumption at the Very Hungry School on Monday? What do you notice about the numbers used on other days?

2. Write and solve some maths questions using the information about consumption on Friday. For example: How many litres of mineral water were consumed on Friday?

3. Create graphs and data tables to support a presentation in which you explain the savings that could be made if consumption at the Very Hungry School was reduced by the following percentages: 5%, 15%, 70%.

4. Design data collection sheets that could be used to monitor consumption at the Very Hungry School. Think about different ways to analyse and present the data that is collected.
