Schools submitted projects outlining how they would plan and implement a strategy to introduce, expand or integrate ESD. The involvement of pupils in decision-making processes and a ‘statement of entitlement’ for ESD were just two of the criteria projects had to meet.

Luton and Peshawar Initiative for Sustainability (1997 – 1998)

Schools in Luton developed plans for incorporating ESD into the ethos, curriculum and management of the school. Learning relationships were built with the local community and local authority, and with linked schools in Pakistan.

Making it Happen (1998 - 2000)

Schools were invited to submit a two year project plan using key areas of the curriculum – English and Citizenship – to introduce a whole school approach to ESD.

Schools in Scotland were invited to submit classroom projects on the themes of ‘People and Trees’, ‘People and Energy’ and ‘People and Water’ with the aim of stimulating good practice in relation to Environmental Studies 5 – 14, particularly ‘Developing Informed Attitudes’.
