Preparation:
Ideally pupils will already have some understanding of the causes of global warming and climate change.
Resources needed:
Internet access
Use the following website for initial research on species:
www.panda.org/about_wwf/what_we_do/climate_change/problems/impacts/species/index.cfm
Background:
Scientists predict that global warming could contribute to the mass extinction of plants and animals in the near future.
Procedure:
Ask the pupils to imagine that they are working for a film company which is planning a series of TV programmes about endangered species.
1. Create an outline plan for a 20 minute television programme which will:
2. Explain the links between travel and climate change to an audience of 7–16 year olds.
3. Focus on the story of 2 ‘headline’ species as a way of illustrating the threat posed by climate change and making people feel that they want to take action.
4. Invite the groups to join a plenary session to share their work. Ask them to explain the reasoning behind their selection of species.
Extension:
Extensions:
Write the introduction and/or conclusion to the programme. Use a video camera to record, evaluate and redraft your work.
Or
Use video, audio, PowerPoint or drama to create a full-scale version of your programme.
Evaluation:
Use images of species, transport and climate change to create a photo montage or moodboard. Discuss your work with a partner.
